Ralf wins 1996 Formula Nippon Championship

Ralf has won the 1996 Formula Nippon Championship. He won the championship by 2 points, narrowly defeating his team-mate as well as a large pack of drivers, including 1983 Formula Ford Festival winner Andrew Gilbert-Scott, 1995 German Formula 3 Champion Norberto Fontana, last year's champion Toshio Suzuki, former Formula 1 driver Marco Apicella, 1994 Japanese Formula 3 Champion Michael Krumm, and former British F3 driver Pedro de la Rosa. He is the youngest ever champion, as well as being the only driver to win the championship in his rookie season.

Ralf has signed a three year deal with Jordan, starting his first Grand Prix with them in 1997. This will make Ralf and Michael the 10th set of brothers to have raced in F1.
